Remembering Music Legend and Garfield Grad Quincy Jones
It’s with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Quincy Jones, a legendary artist whose legacy is firmly embedded within the cloth of Seattle and Seattle Public Faculties (SPS).
As a pupil at Garfield Excessive Faculty from 1947 to 1950, Jones made a profound impression on the college’s music and humanities packages. His time at Garfield was marked by lively participation within the Operetta, refrain, orchestra, and band, and he was the coed director of the swing band and Funfest.
Though Jones left Seattle to pursue his outstanding profession in music and leisure, his ties to this neighborhood by no means waned. In 2008, Garfield honored his enduring affect by naming its performing arts heart in his honor. That very same 12 months, he was awarded the primary Lifetime Achievement Award on the grand-opening gala of the Northwest African American Museum, a testomony to his immeasurable contributions to the humanities and tradition.
By means of the Quincy Jones Performing Arts Middle, Garfield college students proceed to find out about Jones’ extraordinary journey—one which led him to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Corridor of Fame and cemented his place as a worldwide music icon. Annually, college students have interaction along with his legacy by performances and packages that carry his spirit ahead.
Whereas we mourn his passing, Jones’ impression on Garfield, SPS, and the broader neighborhood will proceed to encourage future generations of musicians, artists, and leaders. His affect, each as a groundbreaking artist and a beloved member of our neighborhood, won’t ever be forgotten.
