Sa mère Wendy pressait souvent mes mains sur ses joues et disait, avec une tristesse apaisante, «tu as ses mains». Elle les respirait comme si c’était sa seule probability de le serrer un peu plus près, figé dans le temps. J’espère qu’elle lui tient la essential où qu’elle soit. Au cours des 30 dernières années, mes idées sur le deuil n’ont cessé de se métamorphoser. La plus grande leçon apprise du deuil depuis presque aussi longtemps que j’en suis consciente, c’est qu’il sert un however. La dualité de la vie et de la mort, de la douleur et de la joie, du yin et du yang, doit exister côte à côte, sinon rien de tout cela n’aurait de sens. C’est la nature éphémère de l’existence humaine qui nous plonge dans les profondeurs de nos vies les plus authentiques. Il s’avère qu’il n’y a pas de plus grande motivation pour se pencher sur la conscience aimante que de savoir que tout se termine.

J’aurais aimé pouvoir connaître mon père. J’aurais aimé connaître la cadence de sa voix, à quel level il aimait son café ou la sensation d’être blotti après une histoire au coucher. Je me suis toujours demandé s’il aurait attrapé des têtards avec moi pendant les étés humides de Washington, ou s’il sentait les Camel Lights et le Nesquik aux fraises (ses favoris, m’a-t-on dit). Mais il y a aussi une profonde sagesse sur un chemin accéléré pour comprendre à quel level la vie est précieuse. Il m’a donné une leçon sur la mort qui ne peut venir que de l’expérience VÉCUE de la perte de quelqu’un. C’est le don de savoir avec certitude, lorsque nous nous aimons nous-mêmes et ceux qui nous entourent avec compassion, ouverture et grâce, que notre temps ici devient intrinsèquement plus significatif.

Kurt m’a écrit une lettre avant ma naissance. La dernière ligne dit: «où que tu ailles ou où que j’aille, je serai toujours avec toi». Il a tenu cette promesse parce qu’il est présent de nombreuses manières. Que ce soit en écoutant une chanson ou à travers les mains que nous partageons, dans ces moments-là, je passe un peu de temps avec mon père et il semble transcendant. ✨

Frances Bean Cobain a accompagné son message poignant de sept photographs où on peut la voir, bambine, s’amusant avec son papa et où ce dernier, alors qu’il était encore enfant, souriait encore à la vie.
