MC Gilles, qui collaborait avec Paul Arcand depuis 19 ans, disparaît également du menu de Puisqu’il faut se lever du vendredi matin. Il n’y apparaîtra plus, m’a confirmé le timonier du 98,5 FM, Paul Arcand.
Mais que s’est-il passé, en quelques semaines, pour que les relations s’enveniment à ce level et culminent avec le congédiement du chroniqueur vedette ?
Voici ce que les employés du 98,5 FM ont reçu dans leur boîte courriel, mercredi, peu avant 10 h. « Pour des raisons professionnelles qui demeurent de régie interne, l’affiliation entre Cogeco Média et MC Gilles s’est terminée hier, le mardi 9 avril. Il ne sera pas remplacé avant la fin de saison actuelle. Aucun autre commentaire ne sera fait », révèle le courtroom message, qui n’était pas signé.
Malgré l’impression que pourrait donner ce licenciement, il ne s’agit pas d’une annulation liée au mouvement #moiaussi. MC Gilles négociait son contrat pour la rentrée automnale, rien n’était encore paraphé, et les pourparlers ont dégénéré en affrontement explosif avec ses patrons. Mardi soir, il a été remercié. En théorie, MC Gilles devait rester en ondes, avec Patrick Lagacé et Catherine Beauchamp, jusqu’au 21 juin.
Joint mercredi après-midi, MC Gilles m’a confirmé avoir eu « des conflits de personnalité » avec son collègue Patrick Lagacé ainsi qu’avec la route du 98,5 FM. MC Gilles n’a pas apprécié que son rôle soit considérablement réduit à l’antenne, en prévision de septembre. Sa participation dans l’émission Le Québec maintenant, que pilotera Philippe Cantin, aurait été rétrécie à une seule chronique et il ne sautait pas de joie à l’idée d’animer dans la case horaire du vendredi, entre 18 h 30 et 20 h.
Dans sa chronique publiée le 1er avril, mon collègue Mario Girard a dévoilé que cette émission du vendredi aurait réuni des moments radiophoniques du 98,5 FM sous forme de résumé humoristique. Le hic ? MC Gilles affirme n’avoir jamais donné son accord – ou même signé un quelconque papier – pour l’animer.
« J’étais très fâché, confie MC Gilles. J’étais en vacances dans le Sud et j’ai lu dans le journal le idea potentiel de ma propre émission. J’avais l’impression qu’ils me rentraient ça de pressure dans la gorge. »
C’est fake, réplique la route. Une entente de principe et un contrat résumant les diverses implications de MC Gilles au 98,5 FM étaient en cours de rédaction, indique la directrice générale communication et advertising and marketing chez Cogeco, Christine Dicaire.
« C’est un secret de polichinelle dans la station qu’il y avait des divergences d’opinions par rapport à mon avenir », glisse MC Gilles en répétant « qu’on ne s’en allait pas à la même place, qu’on ne s’entendait pas ».
MC Gilles réfute aussi l’étiquette de « chialeur » qui lui a été accolée par certains de ses collègues. « Ça me fait rire d’entendre ça, alors qu’on était en négociations. Est-ce que négocier, c’est chialer ? » demande MC Gilles.
Le collaborateur d’Infoman et de Tout le monde en parle soutient que l’ambiance « était loin d’être à la fête » dans les coulisses du Québec maintenant, au 98,5 FM. MC Gilles parle d’un climat de travail tendu et orageux, qui rendait son travail quasi inconceivable à l’émission du retour, que dirige le collègue Patrick Lagacé depuis 2019.
En septembre dernier, MC Gilles dit même avoir obtenu un billet d’absence de son médecin, query de préserver sa santé mentale. Depuis, il travaille de chez lui et se rend dans les locaux du 98,5 FM, à la Place Bonaventure, que pour parler dans le micro. MC Gilles n’a pas détaillé l’origine de sa dispute avec Patrick Lagacé, survenue à la fin de l’été 2023.
« Mais ç’aurait été attainable de finir les deux derniers mois de mon contrat », précise MC Gilles. Patrick Lagacé n’a pas réagi aux allégations de son ancien collaborateur.
La dernière année a été extrêmement mouvementée au 98,5 FM, me rapportent plusieurs sources. D’abord, la succession de Paul Arcand a généré beaucoup d’incertitudes et de spéculations à l’interne. Qui suivrait Patrick Lagacé à la matinale ? Qui conserverait son poste dans l’émission du retour à la maison ? Qui remplacerait Nathalie Normandeau entre 10 h et midi ?
Les auditeurs n’aiment pas que l’on bouscule leurs habitudes d’écoute et à peu près toutes les plages du 98,5 FM subiront d’importants changements à la rentrée. Ce qui rend les dirigeants nerveux, bien sûr.
Paul Arcand réveille les Montréalais depuis 20 ans et son départ ferme un chapitre vital de l’histoire de la radio québécoise. Pour les fidèles de Puisqu’il faut se lever, sachez que Catherine Brisson (tradition) et Frédéric Labelle (médias sociaux) reviendront aux côtés de Patrick Lagacé. Paul s’envole, mais ses collaborateurs restent.
