« Mon rôle […] est de [m]’assurer que nous maintenons le bilinguisme, de [m]’assurer que la minorité anglophone au Québec soit protégée et que la minorité francophone hors Québec soit protégée », a lâché Rachel Bendayan quelques minutes après avoir été assermentée.
Devant les journalistes réunis par un froid glacial en face de Rideau Corridor, elle a refusé par deux fois de répondre à la query lui demandant si, oui ou non, elle croit le français menacé au Québec. « Quand tu es rendu à nommer Rachel Bendayan aux Langues officielles, tu as atteint le fond du baril. « Je pense que c’est très mauvais signe, c’est inacceptable. Elle vient contredire tout ce qu’ont dit ses prédécesseurs, qui reconnaissaient le déclin du français et que le fédéral avait une responsabilité pour le freiner. Elle semble tasser ça de la major. […] C’est choquant pour le Québec », a aussi indiqué le député du Bloc québécois Mario Beaulieu, sollicité par Le Devoir.
Contrairement à son habitude, le premier ministre Justin Trudeau n’a pas souhaité expliquer les choix qu’il a effectués pour former sa nouvelle équipe. Au beau milieu d’une crise politique qui secoue son management depuis la démission de sa ministre des Funds Chrystia Freeland, lundi, il a toutefois mentionné la query du français lors d’une uncommon prise de parole.
« Nous nous tenons debout pour les droits des minorités linguistiques, et ça veut dire les francophones à l’extérieur du Québec et les anglophones au Québec », a-t-il déclaré en passant d’une langue à l’autre, dans un discours livré avec le sourire devant son caucus et les employés libéraux réunis mardi pour leur fête de Noël.

Avant la politique, Mme Bendayan était avocate en litige et en arbitrage worldwide au sein du cupboard Norton Rose Fulbright. Elle a été victime d’un accident en début d’année, une chute dans les escaliers extérieurs de sa maison, qui lui a causé une sévère commotion cérébrale, a-t-elle confié au Journal de Montréal lors de son retour au Parlement en juin.
Sa collègue libérale Anna Gainey avait elle aussi refusé de préciser devant la presse parlementaire d’Ottawa si elle croyait le français menacé au Québec. C’était en 2023, peu après son élection lors d’une partielle dans Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount, à Montréal.
