Il aura été le chirurgien sarcastique Hawkeye Pierce dans la model cinématographique de M.A.S.H. (1970), le mari troublé de Julie Christie dans le suspense Ne vous retournez pas de Nicolas Roeg (1973), un officier des renseignements dans le JFK d’Oliver Stone (1991), et plus récemment le dictateur fasciste Snow dans la franchise des Starvation Video games.

Il a également joué dans une nouvelle model de L’invasion des profanateurs (1978) et dans la model de 2005 d’Orgueil et préjugés.

À la télévision, il a interprété le président de la Chambre des représentants dans la série Commander in Chief (2005-2006) et le riche patriarche dans Soiled, Attractive, Cash (2007).

Bien qu’il ait joué dans plus d’une centaine de movies, Donald Sutherland n’a jamais été finaliste pour un Oscar. Il a cependant reçu un Oscar honorifique en 2017, deux nominations aux BAFTA britanniques, un prix Emmy et deux Golden Globes.

Il a également été officier de l’Ordre du Canada et a remporté un Génie et un Prix du Gouverneur général pour les arts du spectacle.

Donald Sutherland était né à Saint-Jean, au Nouveau-Brunswick, et bien qu’il ait travaillé partout dans le monde, il possédait toujours une maison sur le bord du lac Memphrémagog, dans les Cantons-de-l’Est, où il organisait des dîners pour sa famille et ses amis célèbres.

« J’aime ce pays », déclarait-il en 2000 lorsqu’il a reçu le Prix du Gouverneur général. « Vous savez, (W. H.) Auden, le poète anglais, a dit que l’espoir d’un poète est d’être comme un bon fromage de vallée : native, mais prisé ailleurs. C’est un peu ce que je ressens. »

Donald  Sutherland a grandi à Bridgewater, en Nouvelle-Écosse. Son père, Frederick Sutherland, était vendeur et sa mère, Dorothy Isobel, professeure de mathématiques.

À 14 ans, il décroche un emploi à temps partiel en tant que DJ et présentateur de nouvelles pour la station de radio locale CKBW. C’est le début d’une carrière parallèle réussie dans le domaine de la voix de narration, multimédia – une activité que son fils Kiefer a également poursuivie.

Donald Sutherland étudie ensuite l’artwork dramatique, le génie et l’anglais à l’Université de Toronto, où il joue devant le public du Hart Home Theatre – et rencontre sa première femme, Lois Hardwick. Ses souvenirs de soirées arrosées à sa résidence étudiante de l’Université de Toronto auraient inspiré le movie Collège américain de 1978, dans lequel il a joué.

Il half pour Londres

Après avoir obtenu son diplôme en 1958, Sutherland fréquente la London Academy of Music and Dramatic Artwork en Angleterre et proceed à jouer avec le Perth Repertory Theatre en Écosse et dans le West Finish de Londres.

Au début des années 1960, il fait la transition vers des longs métrages, notamment les suspenses et movies d’horreur Le château des morts-vivants et Le prepare des épouvantes. Il décroche également de petits rôles dans des séries télévisées.

En 1966, Sutherland marie sa seconde épouse, l’actrice et militante canadienne Shirley Douglas, fille du fondateur de l’assurance-maladie Tommy Douglas. La même année, ils ont les jumeaux Rachel et Kiefer. Ce dernier est lui-même devenu une vedette à half entière avec des movies comme Génération perdue et la populaire télésérie 24 heures chrono.

Lorsque Sutherland a vu que son fils voulait suivre ses traces, il lui a donné un conseil necessary : « Je me fiche de ce que tu fais de ta vie, mais ne mens pas dans ton travail, automobile ça te rattrapera », raconte Kiefer Sutherland, citant son père, dans une entrevue accordée à La Presse Canadienne en 1998.

La percée de Donald Sutherland aux États-Unis a lieu en 1967 avec le movie Les douze salopards, dans lequel il tient l’affiche avec de grandes vedettes comme Lee Marvin et Charles Bronson.

Trois ans plus tard, il consolide encore son statut de vedette à Hollywood avec deux autres movies de guerre : la satire oscarisée de Robert Altman sur la guerre de Corée, M.A.S.H., et De l’or pour les braves, aux côtés de Clint Eastwood et Telly Savalas.

Les années 1970 ont été une période particulièrement lively pour Sutherland, avec des rôles variés dans une vingtaine d’autres projets, dont Klute, avec Jane Fonda, Le Casanova de Fellini ou L’invasion des profanateurs. Ses rôles dans Ne vous retournez pas et Steelyard Blues lui valent des nominations pour le prix du meilleur acteur aux BAFTA.

Une épouse québécoise

La vie privée de Sutherland a également fait la une des journaux au cours de cette décennie. Il y eut d’abord sa liaison très médiatisée avec Jane Fonda, avec qui il a également contribué à la création d’un spectacle de tournée pacifiste appelé FTA tour (Free The Military). Plus tard, il épousera l’actrice québécoise Francine Racette, avec qui il a eu trois fils : Roeg, Angus et Rossif, vedette de La justice du ring et Une vie en hauteur.

Dans les années 1980, Donald Sutherland proceed à jouer à un rythme effréné, dans près d’une vingtaine de movies, dont Des gens comme les autres, de Robert Redford, pour lequel il a été finaliste pour un Golden Globe, et Impulsions, qui lui a valu un prix Génie au Canada.

Il a remporté deux Golden Globes : en 1996 pour son rôle de soutien dans Le citoyen X, pour lequel il a également remporté un prix Emmy, puis en 2003 pour le movie de HBO Sur le chemin de la guerre.

Il a également pu travailler avec ses fils acteurs, partageant l’écran avec Kiefer dans les movies Le retour de Max Dugan et Le droit de tuer ?, ainsi qu’avec Rossif dans De retour de jail.

De passage à Westville, en Nouvelle-Écosse, jeudi matin, le premier ministre, qui venait d’apprendre la nouvelle, a salué la mémoire de ce « fier Canadien », ce « grand acteur qui a œuvré dans l’industrie du cinéma worldwide pendant bien des décennies ».

« C’est un second très triste, a-t-il dit. Je pense à Kiefer et à toute la famille Sutherland. Mais je pense aussi à la communauté des artistes à travers le pays qui en ont perdu un autre grand aujourd’hui. »

Il était aussi un grand fan de baseball et des Expos de Montréal.

Hommage de Justin Trudeau

Le premier ministre Justin Trudeau a regretté la disparition de ce « fier Canadien », « un grand acteur qui a œuvré dans l’industrie du cinéma worldwide pendant bien des décennies ». « C’est un second très triste, je pense à Kiefer et à toute la famille Sutherland, mais je pense aussi à la communauté des artistes à travers le pays qui en ont perdu un autre grand aujourd’hui », a-t-il réagi en marge d’une annonce en Nouvelle-Écosse, jeudi après-midi.

Il s’est souvenu d’une rencontre avec Donald Sutherland alors qu’il était jeune homme. « J’étais totalement en admiration. Il avait une présence impressionnante, et il exerçait son artwork avec brio », a raconté le premier ministre, qui a appris le décès de l’artiste alors qu’il était au lutrin.

Donald Sutherland en cinq movies

Le Canadien Donald Sutherland a joué dans près de 200 movies et séries avec des réalisateurs talentueux comme Fellini (Casanova), Altman (M. A. S. H.) ou encore Oliver Stone (JFK). L’acteur polymorphe, qui a connu une fin de carrière prolifique, avait reçu un Oscar d’honneur en 2017.

1. M. A. S. H. (1970)

Cette farce antimilitariste de Robert Altman révèle Donald Sutherland qui, trois ans plus tôt, avait déjà participé au Douze salopards, brûlot pacifiste réalisé par Robert Aldrich sorti pendant la guerre du Vietnam.

Trois jeunes chirurgiens, parmi lesquels Donald Sutherland, vont semer le désordre dans une base de l’armée américaine en Corée. Envoyés pour soigner les blessés, les trois hommes, adeptes des femmes et de l’alcool, vont participer à cette guerre cruelle dans la joie et la bonne humeur.

M*A*S*H vaut à Donald Sutherland, lui-même militant pacifiste, une nomination aux Golden Globes.

2. Klute (1971)

Dans ce thriller d’ambiance, Donald Sutherland incarne John Klute, un détective privé mystérieux, parti à la recherche d’un homme qui a disparu dans d’étranges circonstances. Sur sa piste, il rencontre Jane Fonda, une prostituée pas ordinaire, harcelée au téléphone par un maniaque sexuel. L’actrice, sa compagne de l’époque, reçoit un Oscar et un Golden Globe pour ce rôle.

3. Casanova (1977)

Il n’était pas son premier choix, mais Federico Fellini finit par choisir Donald Sutherland pour incarner sa imaginative and prescient du séducteur « sans âme, vide de sens ».

Le réalisateur détestait Casanova et l’acteur canadien lui sert d’abord de défouloir. Il le poudre, le grime, le rase pour lui agrandir le entrance et le transformer en pantin obscène.

Mais en définitive, l’acteur, sous le charme capricieux du réalisateur, confiait à Libération que « le tournage fut en fait comme un lengthy ébat amoureux ». À la fin, « il m’a offert une montre en or avec ces mots gravés : “Avec tout mon amour, Federico”. J’aurais pu arrêter ma carrière à ce moment-là. »

4. JFK (1991)

Dans l’enquête sur l’assassinat du président américain John Fitzgerald Kennedy, un procureur va plus loin que la vérité donnée par les autorités. Sutherland joue le rôle de Mister X, la mystérieuse supply anonyme qui donne des informations cruciales sur l’entourage du président.

Le movie d’Oliver Stone est un grand succès, 16 nominations et cinq récompenses (Oscars, Golden Globes et Bafta), mais aucune pour Sutherland.

5. Starvation Video games (2012-2015)

Donald Sutherland joue le rôle du président Coriolanus Snow, dictateur merciless de « Panem » nation née des cendres de l’Amérique du Nord postapocalyptique, dans Starvation Video games. Il excelle en tourmenteur implacable de l’héroïne Jennifer Lawrence.
